From 18 to 23 October 2013, ICSSPE will host the 6th edition of “Communities and Crisis – Inclusive Development through Sport“ in Rheinsberg, Germany. “Communities and Crisis” was first initiated in 2007. Since then, more than 300 participants from all over the world have taken part in this seminar. “Communities and Crisis” provides participants with unique insights into the use of sport and physical activity for inclusive community building, particularly in areas recently affected by crises. These crises include natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or tornadoes, as well as man-made crises like civil wars and vulnerable communities.

Sport, play and physical activity are integral parts to the community rebuilding process. Careful design and implementation of these programmes under consideration of cultural diversity, gender and inclusion of all age groups is critical to ensuring positive development and avoid potentially harmful psychological effects.

Through this programme, participants learn to use sport as positive a means of physiological and psychological rehabilitation, both through practical, hands-on workshops as well as through theoretical learning sessions. It emphasises the importancet of cultural sensitivity and the implementation of appropriate monitoring and evaluation techniques.

The seminar will provide experiential and pedagogical learning experiences in the following areas:

  • Psychological aspects of trauma
  • The role of sport, play and physical activity in community building and disaster recovery
  • Gender equality issues such as participation, empowerment and protection
  • Victimisation and trauma, participation and inclusion
  • Development and maintenance of sport and movement
  • Self-care and team-building within socially problematic areas
  • Funding, monitoring and evaluation
  • Implementation of psycho-social sport programmes
