Doha GOALS 2013

Doha GOALS is the world’s premier platform for world leaders to create initiatives for global progress through sport.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Emir of Qatar, Doha GOALS, Gathering of All Leaders in Sport, was founded in January 2012 at the Doha GOALS Pre-Forum.

Each year, global leaders will gather in Doha with top stakeholders – CEOs, government officials, athletes, NGOs, federation heads, urban developers, coaches, managers, and medical experts – to create partnerships and initiatives to tackle the most pressing social issues through plenary sessions, debates, and focused taskforces that enable constructive brainstorming and focused collaboration.

Doha GOALS will conclude by outlining a roadmap of initiatives capable of addressing issues like economic development through sport, the welfare of athletes, federation governance, sport as a tool for education of youth, integration of women and minorities through sport, and cross-culture cooperation.

The founder of the International Olympic Committee, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, said:

“A country can truly call itself sporting when the majority of its people feel a personal need for sport.”

Sport is stronger and more effective than any political agenda in achieving social and economic goals. Events — from the Olympic Games to the World Cup to the Tour de France — bring nations together and have become a “mandatory development tool” for business leaders, NGOs, policymakers, physicians, architects, and, of course, athletes.

Sport fosters new dialogues and promotes solidarity among individuals, cities, states, and corporations. This is the platform upon which the Doha GOALS Forum exists. Rather than acting as a conference — where ideas are traded but rarely enacted — Doha GOALS is a two-and-a-half day initiative with the express intent of empowering stakeholders to create a roadmap for social improvement through sport, and launch cross-border initiatives.

Whatever direction these initiatives take, participants will agree with the Baron’s assessment that

“sport is part of every man and woman’s heritage and its absence can never be compensated for.”
