Environmental impact of Qatar’s Stadium 974 outlined in new report

A study into the environmental impact of Qatar’s Stadium 974 – the first fully demountable tournament venue in FIFA World Cup™ history – has been published.

The report, titled ‘Greenhouse Gas Emission Analysis of a Demountable FIFA World Cup™ Stadium’, was commissioned by FIFA and delivered by emission reduction experts.

Stadium 974 is built primarily from shipping containers and recycled steel. It is located in Doha – close to Hamad International Airport and opposite the stunning West Bay skyline. The venue hosted its first match on 30 November 2021 during the FIFA Arab Cup™. During Qatar 2022, the stadium will host seven matches up to the round of 16 stage.

The report outlines various scenarios in relation to the stadium’s legacy – including the potential for it to be repurposed in one, two or three new locations.

 International Transfer Market Snapshot 2020

FIFA published its International Transfer Market Snapshot June-October 2020, an analysis of player transfer activity during the transfer window that closed on Monday.

It is the first time that FIFA has created and published such an overview of global transfers involving both male and female players immediately after the conclusion of the international transfer window. The Snapshot gives a brief overview of transfer activity between June and October, taking into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, both on the extended deadline for deals to be struck and the willingness of clubs to engage in the market.

COVID-19: Football Regulatory Issues

Following the unprecedented disruption caused by COVID-19 at all levels of football, FIFA has worked on a series of recommendations and guidelines to address some of the key practical issues arising from the pandemic, especially with regard to player contracts and the transfer system generally. This has been done in consultation with different stakeholders through a task force chaired by the FIFA Vice-President and chairman of the FIFA Football Stakeholders Committee, Vittorio Montagliani, and including representatives of clubs, players, leagues, national associations and confederations.

A set of principles has been unanimously agreed by the task force and was endorsed by the Bureau of the FIFA Council today.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly changed all the factual circumstances around football for this season. So, FIFA, together with the stakeholders, has come up with some practical ideas and proposals to tackle these new circumstances. Whilst this will not solve each and every problem, it should serve to bring a measure of stability and clarity to football for the foreseeable future. We hope that this collaborative effort, under the leadership of FIFA, can provide a positive example of how football can come together and show unity, solidarity and a spirit of compromise in order to face the challenging times ahead. But before these times come, one thing must be clear to everyone, especially now: health comes first, well before football,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Below is a summary of the main guidelines approved, which FIFA both hopes and expects will be followed around the world.

FIFA and FIFPRO have reached an agreement to establish the FIFA Fund for Football Players (FIFA FFP), which aims to provide financial support to players who have not been paid and have no chance of duly receiving the wages agreed with their clubs.
FIFA has set aside $16 million (USD) for the fund up to 2022, with this allocation to be divided as follows: USD 3m in 2020, USD 4m in 2021 and USD 4m in 2022, plus a further USD 5m set aside for the retroactive protection of players’ salaries for the period between July 2015 and June 2020.

Several recent reports – including FIFPRO’s own 2016 Global Employment Report: Working Conditions in Professional Football – have attested to the proliferation of cases involving the non-payment of players’ salaries across the world.

FIFA releases full Garcia report into corruption in 2018, ’22 World Cup bids

FIFA released the full contents of the Garcia report that examined alleged corruption in 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding on Tuesday, one day after it was leaked to German newspaper Bild.

The 2014 report by independent ethics investigator Michael J. Garcia was once expected to be explosive and became a holy grail for FIFA critics who thought the votes that gave the World Cups to Russia and Qatar could be rerun.

Previously, FIFA had only published a 42-page summary of his findings, released by its then-ethics judge, Hans-Joachim Eckert. The move upset Garcia, who said the reduced document misrepresented his work.
